The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends that children have regular eye exams starting in infancy. The AOA's recommendations include:
- 6 months: A comprehensive baseline exam
- 3 years: An exam to check for conditions that could have long-term effects
- 5 or 6 years: An exam before starting kindergarten or first grade
- Every 1-2 years: An exam for school-aged children who don't need corrective lenses
- Annual exams: For children who need corrective lenses or are at risk for vision problems
